Department of Pediatric Surgery

Introduction: - The department of Pediatric Surgery, I.G.I.M.S. – Patna was the first department in the government sector of Bihar started way back in 1996. All the surgical problems of babies starting from new born to fifteen years are treated including neonatal emergencies. The department of pediatric surgery caters the need of children of Bihar, Jharkhand and adjoining Nepal. Many innovative and complex surgeries had been performed in the past and published in the various journals. The department is currently located in the first floor of family ward having twenty four beds including post operative recovery ward .The department has recently started five bedded neonatal intensive surgical care (NISCU) for the sick post operative babies having round the clock availability of senior resident and nursing staff. This care has drastically reduced post operative mortality in neonatal patients. The present department is headed by Prof Vijayendra Kumar an academician and scholar having more than sixty publications in reputed journals.

Highlights:

It is the only centre in Government sector in Bihar with facilities for handling neonatal emergency surgeries.
We are performing single stage operation of anorectal malformation in neonates. More than fifty cases had been performed successfully in the last one year.
